Lohri 2027 is celebrated on Thursday, 14 January 2027, the night before Makar Sankranti. It marks the end of the coldest part of winter and the harvest of rabi crops in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu.
This year the Sun enters Makara (Capricorn) at Thu, 14 Jan 2027, 21:10 IST. Because the ingress is after sunset, Makar Sankranti is observed on Friday, 15 January 2027 and Lohri on the evening before.
Lohri Traditions
Families light a bonfire after sunset and offer til (sesame), gur, rewri, gajak, peanuts and popcorn to the fire while walking around it. Folk songs such as "Sunder Mundriye" remember Dulla Bhatti, and the first Lohri of a new bride or baby is celebrated with special joy.
Dates and times are calculated with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) for the place stated on this page. See our methodology.
